Reiki is a method in which a person by meditation, and placement of hands receives "life energy" that is widespread in the Universe. With that method a person can be healed from different illnesses, and can also heal others. This method was developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui after a twenty-one day retreat on Mount Kurama, involving meditation, fasting, and prayer. He claimed that he had a mystical revelation which gave him the knowledge to heal other people and attune them to what he called reiki. In April 1922 he moved to Tokyo where he founded Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai , meaning Usui's Spiritual Energy Therapy Society.

Considering that he is Buddhist, who doesn't believe in the personal God, the question is to whom does he pray? Buddhists believe that purpose of their lives is to reach nirvana, and that is the state of bliss (beatitude), but they do not believe that God is a person. How can you pray to something that is not a person? Can energy answer your prayers? Mikao Usui claimed that after that retreat on Mount Kurama he became enlightened and received ability to heal other people. Who enlightened Mikao Usui if he doesn't believe in the personal God, and who gave him this "ability to heal"?

The name reiki comes from Chinese langugae. "Rei" means a soul, and "ki" or "chi" means energy or life energy. We find the same term in other spiritual techniques that originate from China, for example Tai Chi, which also has the same negative consequences for people.

First it is important to say that there isn't any "life energy" (sometimes they use the term "divine energy" or "universal life force"). That is the term often found in the Far East but also used in the New Age, because New Age never speaks about the personal God. It rather uses terms like energy, nirvana, prana, chi etc. It is also impossible to prove that there is such energy, or that it can be channeled through a person.

There are few main reiki system that have been established: Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, Reido Reiki Gakkai , Komyo Reiki Kai. For example Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is the association of reiki masters founded by Mikao Usui. After Usui died, Ushida became the president of this association. This society remained secret for many years. It is often that these associations are hidden behind the veil of mystery, but they do not posses any knowledge that  could really help anyone. They use this secrecy to intrigue people, but there is nothing behind it. It was the same with gnosis in the first Christian centuries.

There are many associations, especially in the USA, that promote so called "reiki for Christians". Reiki has nothing to do with Christianity. It was developed by a Buddhist and includes techniques that don't belong to Christianity. There are many websites about "Christian reiki" where authors are using quotations from the Bible, but these quotations are misinterpreted. There is not one single line in the Bible that would encourage the Christians to practice reiki. In Western reiki, it is taught that rieki works in conjunction with meridian energy lines and chakras. Mikao Usui also taught a technique Joshin Kokyuu-ho and that is a breathing technique which should be practiced to channel reiki energy through the crown chakra.  Chakras come from Hinduism and are incompatible with Christianity. Reiki has elements from Buddhism and Hinduism, and these are both false religions.

In March 2009, the Committee on Doctrine of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a decree (Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki as an Alternative Therapy) halting the practice of Reiki by Catholics, including Reiki therapies used in some Catholic retreat centers and hospitals. The conclusion of the decree stated that "since Reiki therapy is not compatible with either Christian teaching or scientific evidence, it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions, such as Catholic health care facilities and retreat centers, or persons representing the Church, such as Catholic chaplains, to promote or to provide support for Reiki therapy."

We know from the Bible that Jesus had the ability to heal people with the power of the Holy Spirit, but there is no method with which we can receive this ability. Christianity is not a method, but faith in the living God. There are Christians who think that reiki can give a man a power of healing, but this opinion is completely wrong. Jesus gave his disciples this ability, but He didn't give it to all Christians and that is something that we have to accept.

In the whole New Testament Jesus never once mentioned reiki nor did He mention any Buddhist that will reveal Christians how they are going to be healed. That's why I find contradictory those Christians who think that they will receive through reiki the same power that Jesus had.

In reiki energy is supposed to be transmitted through the hands of practitioners. This form of laying hands on a person can have a very bad consequences. In the Catholic Church laying hands on a person in unacceptable, and priests who are studying this matter claim that this can be a channel of the occult forces. Catholic Bishops in their Dioceses do not allow that lay people place their hands on other people while praying, because lay people usually do not have a gift of healing. It is even worse when someone is laying hands on people and is not praying in the name of Jesus. Reiki treatments where the practitioner holds his palms few inches from the body are also unacceptable as well as those that are done from the distance.

Many clinical trials that were made in 2008. confirmed that reiki treatment didn't help anyone, regardless what illness did they have. The results of those trials were published in International Journal of Clinical Practice: Lee, Pittler,  Ernst (2008). "Effects of reiki in clinical practice: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials".

In reiki there are three levels that a practitioner can achieve. It is still interesting that initiation on all of these levels is paid with money, and not a small amount. It is obvious that reiki is not a spirituality but an easy way of earning money. Mikao Usui died in 1926, and by that time he already had many students. One of his students, Hawayo Takata travelled through USA teaching first two levels. She taught that reiki treatments should be paid with money, and she fixed the price of 10.000 $ for the Masters level. It is interesting that she gave exactly that amount of energy to one follower to make this price such a round number (that would be full year earnings in Croatia).

For the Catholic Church reiki is unacceptable. Primarily, God is a person, not an energy or some abstract sense of bliss. It is also clear that there is no energy in the Universe that could be channeled through a person in order to heal him or anyone else. And the very fact that someone has to pay practitioners to channel this "energy" is questioning their meditation and fasting, because then this energy can be bought for money.
